Bilateral meeting between United State and the Kingdom of Cambodia in the fifth meeting of state parties

An eight-member Cambodian delegation recently attended the Fifteenth Meeting of the States Parties to the Mine Ban Treaty, held in Santiago, Chile from 28 November to 1 December 2016.

H.E. Serei Kosal, Senior Minister in charge of Special Missions, and CMAA’s First Vice President, led the delegation and delivered a statement on mine clearance in Cambodia. He also met with Cambodia’s development partner countries, including Australia, China and Japan, updating them on both the remaining landmine contamination in Cambodia and the financial support required to clear all known mine/UXO contaminated land by 2025. According to CMAA’s new National Mine Action Strategy (2017-2025), Cambodia will need 406 million USD in order to release 1,946 km² of land.

The Mine Ban Treaty, also known as the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction, was adopted in 1997. More than 150 countries, including Cambodia, have joined this treaty.
